Whether you play golf, tennis or just want to be in better shape vision plays a vital part in our performance. In this video the vision assessment measures eye convergence.

Vergence allows you as an athlete to shift the distance at which you are focusing quickly. This is especially important for everyday activities such as driving, or watching a child while making lunch.

If you are playing a sport such a tennis or golf you need to be able to quickly focus on close contact with the ball as well as be able to quickly focus on the long range target.

The standard for the drill in this video is to be able to keep the pen in focus and without double vision all the way to the tip of the nose.

This is just one of the 29 functions of the eyes. And while it is easy to understand how training the eyes will improve your vision and your hand-eye coordination, it may not be intuitive to understand how it impacts other aspects of your movement. If you play tennis our golf try this. Swing your club or racket a few times, do 3-5 reps of the eye drill, and swing again. If you had more speed, flexibility, or power then this is the right drill for you. If you did not get better then this drill should be modified or changed to suit the current requirements of your nervous system.

Like your vestibular system which I briefly introduced last week, the information provided by our vision has a direct impact on our posture and movement. When our eyes are not producing enough information about our environment the stress on our nervous system increases and our performance decreases. Long-term stress will lead to chronic pain.

Physical stress on the nervous system is composed our brain’s map of where we are and how we are moving, our balance, and our vision. When all three of these systems are trained correctly we are able to correct dysfunctional movement patterns and get out of pain, and improve our performance.
